HISTORY
The Affenpinscher, also known as the 'Monkey Terrier' (Affe is German for monkey), is a small but feisty dog with a playful and adventurous spirit. The breed's history traces back to the 17th century in Germany where they were originally used to help control rodent populations in homes, stables and shops. With their keen hunting instincts and relentless energy, they were good at their job. Over time, these intelligent and affectionate little dogs transitioned from skilled workers to beloved companions. They became particularly popular among nobles and royals, treasured for both their entertaining antics and their loyal nature. The Affenpinscher's distinctive appearance, characterised by its shaggy coat and monkey-like facial expressions, only added to their charm.

WHY YOU'LL FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR AFFENPINSCHER
- Never a dull moment: their spirited and mischevious personality keeps life interesting
- Their 'monkey' faces give them a distincitive facial expressions that range from 'profound philosopher' to 'mischievous imp'!
- They are portable and practical, especially if you don't have a great deal of space
WHY THEY MAY BE HARD TO LIVE WITH
- Their bravery sometimes leads them into trouble, forgetting their size when challenging larger foes
- They can be independent (seemingly stubborn) demanding patience and consistency in training
- Vocal is their middle name: they'll alert you to a visitor, a passing car or a blowing leaf
YOUR AFFENPINSCHER PUPPY HIGHLIGHTS
Your puppy is likely to want to be super connected and ready to learn about anything you introduce them to.
They're also likely to want to pick up anything and everything and take off with it – so, management is key, ensuring they can't access what you don't want them to have.
Be very conscious not to create a resource-guarding problem by accident.
If your puppy does 'steal' something, be sure not to chase, but instead teach your pup to come to you and trade stolen goodies for something better.
YOU MAY NEED PROFESSIONAL HELP WITH:
- Managing their barking and territorial behaviour
- House training
- Guiding positive first impressions and friendships with other pets and strangers
YOUR RELATIONSHIP SURVIVAL KEY
- Embrace their inner lion with respect, love, and a firm, gentle guiding hand
- Keep their clever minds engaged; boredom is the arch-nemesis of the Affenpinscher spirit
- Snuggle sessions are sacred; nothing strengthens the bond like a good cuddle
UPBRINGING
Consistency is your mantra –these little ones thrive with clear boundaries and positive reinforcement. Expose them to the world giving them as many diverse experiences with sights, sounds, and friendly faces as possible. Learning should be fun, engaging, and rewarding (for both ends of the lead!).

INTERESTS & HOBBIES
Affies love interactive play, especially fetch and puzzle toys and they'll enjoy short bursts of activities like brisk walks or play sessions with familiar dogs. They thrive on being involved in family activities.
EDUCATION
Start training early, focusing on basic skills and social behaviors. Keep training sessions short and fun to hold their attention and motivate them with treats and other rewards.
