HISTORY
The Clumber Spaniel, one of the oldest of the spaniel breeds, originated in Britain in the late 18th century. Developed at Clumber Park, the estate of the Duke of Newcastle, the breed was initially used as a gun dog for flushing and retrieving game birds such as pheasant and partridge. With their slow, steady pace and strong build, Clumbers were ideal for long days in the field, particularly in dense underbrush where they could methodically work through challenging terrain.
The breed became a favorite among British nobility, including King Edward VII and Prince Albert. Over time, Clumber Spaniels became closely associated with aristocratic hunting parties, but their numbers declined after World War I as other faster gun dog breeds gained popularity. Dedicated breeders worked to revive the Clumber Spaniel, and while they are less common today, they remain beloved for their calm demeanor, loyal nature, and excellent retrieving skills. The Clumber’s history as a steady, reliable working dog is reflected in its calm, patient personality, making it an ideal companion for those who appreciate a quieter, more deliberate dog.

YOUR RELATIONSHIP SURVIVAL KEY
To build a strong relationship with your Clumber Spaniel, it's essential to provide consistent training, clear guidance, and plenty of affection. Clumbers thrive in calm, structured environments and enjoy being part of the family. Regular grooming and exercise, along with careful portion control, will help maintain their health. These dogs respond best to patient, positive reinforcement during training. Clumbers are devoted companions who will reward your efforts with loyalty, calm companionship, and a steady presence in your life.
UPBRINGING
Raising a Clumber Spaniel requires patience and consistency. Early socialization is crucial to ensure they become confident, well-adjusted adults. They respond well to positive reinforcement, but their independent streak means they may not always be immediately obedient. Establishing a grooming routine early on is also important, as their thick coat requires regular maintenance. Leash training and basic cues should be introduced at a young age, as Clumbers can be strong-willed and determined. They thrive in environments where they have structure, routine, and plenty of love.
LIFESTYLE
The ideal lifestyle for a Clumber Spaniel is one that balances moderate activity with plenty of relaxation. They enjoy being part of family life and are content with regular, calm walks and time spent outdoors. A home with a yard is perfect for a Clumber, but they can also adapt well to apartment living as long as they receive daily walks and mental stimulation. Clumber Spaniels love spending time with their family and will happily relax with you after a walk or playtime. They are a good fit for calm households looking for a peaceful, affectionate companion.
INTERESTS & HOBBIES
Clumber Spaniels enjoy activities that engage their natural retrieving instincts, such as fetch or scent work. They are not as high-energy as some other gun dogs, so low-impact games like hide-and-seek or gentle walks are ideal. Clumbers also enjoy mental challenges, so interactive toys or puzzle feeders can provide the stimulation they need. While not the fastest runners, they enjoy exploring new environments and will be content with leisurely outdoor activities.
EDUCATION
Training a Clumber Spaniel should focus on positive reinforcement and consistency. They respond well to gentle, patient training, and basic obedience cues are essential. Clumbers are intelligent but deliberate learners, so it’s important to remain patient and reward their progress. Activities like scent work or retrieving games can engage their natural instincts and keep them mentally stimulated. Early socialization and consistent training will help prevent any behavioral issues and ensure they grow into calm, confident adults.
