HISTORY

The Bichon Frise, with its name referring to a 'curly lap dog' in French, boasts an aristocratic heritage. Originating in the Mediterranean region, these dogs were adored by Italian nobles in the 14th century before their charm captivated the French royalty in the 16th century. Despite their royal connections, Bichons were also popular as circus dogs due to their agility and trainability. Today, they're cherished family pets known for their affectionate demeanor and have a so-called 'hypoallergenic' coat.

WHY YOU'LL FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR BICHON FRISE

  • Their irresistible charm and cheerful disposition
  • The hypoallergenic coat (better suited for allergy sufferers as they don't shed seasonally and will not create a lot of dander  which is what tends to cause allergies)
  • Their reputation as great entertainers will fill your home with laughter

WHY THEY MAY BE HARD TO LIVE WITH

  • With their curly coats, consistent grooming is non-negotiable
  • They can be a tad 'stubborn', making training a test of patience
  • They can be prone to separation anxiety and prefer constant companionship

YOUR BICHON FRISE PUPPY HIGHLIGHTS

YOU MAY NEED PROFESSIONAL HELP WITH:

  • Managing separation issues
  • House training
  • Curbing excessive barking

YOUR RELATIONSHIP SURVIVAL KEY

Patience, especially during training, and lots of interactive play. Remember, your Bichon thrives on love and companionship — the more, the merrier!

UPBRINGING

Emphasise socialisation gentle yet consistent training and help them adapt to short periods of alone time to prevent anxiety.

LIFESTYLE

They adore comfort and will love a cozy lap or cushion. A secure yard to explore would be a bonus but isn't necessary. Expect your Bichon to be a social butterfly who's eager to greet friends. However, keep an eye on their boldness with larger dogs. They're all about family and get along well with children and other pets, though early socialisation helps.

Loves playtime, especially fetch, and will appreciate puzzle toys. Enjoys performing tricks and being the center of attention.

EDUCATION

Focus on socialization, basic commands, and polite behavior. They're intelligent and responsive but can play the clown if lessons become too repetitive.
