HISTORY

Originating from the island of Madagascar more than three centuries ago, the Coton de Tulear, is a breed with a rich and noble heritage. The name 'Coton' reflects the cotton-like texture of its distinctive coat, while 'Tulear' is a nod to the Madagascan port of the same name where the story of the Coton de Tulear begins. European merchants in the 15th or 16th century are credited with introducing various Bichon-type companion dogs to Madagascar. These dogs, admired for their beauty and affectionate personality, likely interbred to give rise to the breed we know today. The Coton de Tulear was so prized that it was exclusively owned by the Royal Malagasy nobles, earning it the title 'Royal Dog of Madagascar', It was forbidden for anyone other than royalty to own the breed, marking its status as a symbol of nobility and luxury. The breed's journey from the royal courts of Madagascar to households worldwide is a testament to its enduring charm and affectionate nature. The Coton de Tulear has captured hearts globally. Despite its royal roots, this breed is far from aloof.
